Jaz’s Favourite Motivational Quotes from Television/Film

I’m determined to be a happier and more productive version of me from now on (I’m a sufferer of the procrastination curse!) so I thought I’d write this and give myself some inspiration and, of course share that with anyone else that stumbles across it. I have watched a lot of films and TV series throughout my life and many actually give you really good advice on just life and stuff. Here are a few of my favourites:

“Oh yes, the past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it, or learn from it.” Rafiki, from The Lion King

This is one of my main childhood, nostalgic films. The message is pretty clear, we make mistakes so we can learn from them and grow as a person. When I do something stupid or embarrassing or make a terrible mistake, I want to bury myself under my duvet and never emerge (which is perfectly acceptable for a day or so), but you need to motivate yourself to get up and laugh it off and try not to do it again if it’s something silly. If it’s a massive mistake that’s affected your life, go out and fix it.

“Listen with your heart, you will understand.” Grandmother Willow from Pocahontas

Yeah, another Disney film! I really like this quote because I’m a strong believer that you know yourself better than anyone, so your own advice to yourself is the most reliable. It’s good to spend time on your own and figure out what you want to do with your life. I’m still not quite sure what I’m doing, but I’ll figure it out.

“Do or do not. There is no try.” Yoda from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Yoda’s advice to Luke when he’s all like “I’ll try” but just doesn’t sound enthusiastic. Don’t do something half heartedly, if you don’t really want it, don’t waste your time and if you do, go out and be awesome at it. If you fail, at least you did the best you could and you know there was nothing you could have done differently.

“This isn’t life, it’s just stuff. And it’s become more important to you than living. Well, honey, that’s just nuts.” Lester Burnham from American Beauty

Don’t let material possessions become more important than family, friends, health and happiness. I waste so much money on clothes and make up that I don’t need. It’s nice to buy the odd treat but money can’t literally buy happiness. Save money for moving out and travelling, Jaz!

“My, my, what beautiful blossoms we have this year. But look, this one’s late! I bet when it blooms, it will be most beautiful of all.” Fa Zhou from Mulan

Going back to the spending time to figure out what you want to do with your life, if it takes time and everything you try to do with your life seems to fail, it’s better late than never. I’ve failed at my A Levels, my degree, my long term relationships, my driving lessons, loads of job applications and everything seems to go wrong and now I’m just a receptionist. But eventually, I’ll know exactly what I want and I’ll be amazing at it!

“I like being on my own. Relationships are messy and people’s feelings get hurt. Who needs it? We’re young, we live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Might as well have fun while we can and save the serious stuff for later.” Summer Finn from (500) Days of Summer

Why are people scared of being on their own? Don’t worry about being single and not finding “the one” yet. I’ve been single for 6 months and I’m really enjoying it. I’ve always had boyfriends and I haven’t gone longer than 3 months without one since I was under the age of 16. Now I feel so free, I have more time money and fun and everything is just so much simpler. I’m sure when you eventually find the right person, it’s all good but single life is also pretty darn good.

“I brake for birds. I rock a lot of polka dots. I have touched glitter in the last 24 hours. I spend my entire day talking to children. And I find it fundamentally strange that you’re not a dessert person. It freaks me out.” Jessica Day from New Girl

First, there’s nothing wrong with being girly. Secondly, you should be who you are and don’t let anyone’s unfair judgement change you or make you feel like you shouldn’t be that way. I’m really awkward and nerdy and many people don’t understand my obsession with cats, books, Nintendo and Adventure Time but it’s who I am and it makes me happy. Also, who isn’t a dessert person?!

“You gotta focus on what’s real, man. You’re getting hung up on imaginary problems.” Jake from Adventure Time

Don’t waste time worrying about silly things. Sometimes, I overthink things that don’t matter and won’t affect my life… stop it Jaz. What’s the point in causing ourselves unnecessary stress?

“I have spent my whole life scared, frightened of things that could happen, might happen, might not happen, 50-years I spent like that. Finding myself awake at three in the morning. But you know what? Ever since my diagnosis, I sleep just fine. What I came to realize is that fear, that’s the worst of it. That’s the real enemy. So, get up, get out in the real world and you kick that bastard as hard you can right in the teeth.” Walter White from Breaking Bad

Obviously, I don’t recommend that you start a drug empire but go out and live your life the way you want to, you only get one chance at living. Do what you want… within reason. Seriously, if this was set in the UK, Walt would have gotten his cancer treatment on the NHS and none of this would of happened! Haha.

Sorry if this got a bit deep.
Sometimes you need a bit of time to just sit back and evaluate life.
